The School of Spirit
The School of Spirit is the Being school of the Threefold Path. It begins with thinking and attention: noticing what moves through the mind, examining what a belief rests on, and learning to think deliberately.
Being belongs with Body and Balance. Clear thinking meets bodily habits and feelings in every choice. This school brings study and observation together so understanding can serve freedom and love. Spiritual convictions remain named as convictions, not presented as scientific proof.

The work in a day
Focused Thought, Open Inquiry, and Backward Review belong to this school's practice shelf. Each practice has a purpose, a dose, and cautions. Practice remains voluntary and reversible.
The Being practice shelfOne shared rhythm
The public foundation offers eight practices and a forty-day rhythm, with safeguards and sources. A future paid course is in development; no enrollment is open.

What this pillar trains
The Being pillar trains thinking (the spirit's instrument) on the field where every other training is won or lost: the mind itself. Most of what passes for thinking is not thought at all. It is noise, opinion, and imitation running as cognition: phrases absorbed from the surrounding air, verdicts inherited before the evidence arrived, a commentary that narrates the day without once being chosen. The discovery that begins this pillar is simple and unsettling: there is a watcher behind the noise, and until the watcher takes up its instrument, thoughts think themselves and call the result a self.
This pillar exists to make thinking a deed instead of an event. The work here is governance, not cleverness: attention held where it is placed, ideas met before they are judged, and, hardest of all, honesty about what kind of thing one knows. Belief worn as knowledge is compulsion in its most respectable costume, and the Path refuses the costume. A claim examined here is asked its kind before it is asked its content, and the asking is itself the training.
What it inherits
This pillar teaches theses III, IV, and VI of the Philosophy. Thesis IV names the instrument: attention is the first instrument, the one every human being already holds and almost no one has been taught to use; study before vision, clarity before ascent. Thesis VI names the discipline: truthfulness about knowledge is itself a spiritual practice, and every claim must say what kind of claim it is. Thesis III names the stakes: spirit is real (the I that thinks in you is not produced by the body and does not end with it), and the Path holds this as conviction, never dressed as science. Everything below is those three inheritances, walked in ten steps.
The arc
Like every pillar, Being walks thesis II in miniature: The Cage, The Training, The Return. The Cage names the compulsion honestly: thoughts that think themselves, and certainty borrowed instead of earned. The Training builds the capacity: governed thought, open inquiry, claims sorted by their kinds, and the classical exercises and texts taken up with both reverence and honesty. The Return gives the capacity away: the day witnessed without self-accusation, and the trained thinking turned at last toward what it was trained for.
This order is the recommended walk, not a turnstile. Whoever is called by one page before the others begins there; no one is sent.
The reading sequence
The Cage
- Thoughts That Think Themselves [Know]. Noise, opinion, imitation running as cognition; the discovery that there is a watcher.
- Borrowed Certainty [Feel]. Belief worn as knowledge; compulsion in its most respectable costume.
The Training
- Focused Thought [Act]. The Foundation practice in full: five minutes of governed thought on a pencil. (coming)
- Open Inquiry [Act]. The Foundation practice: meeting the new without a pre-formed verdict. (coming)
- Kinds of Claims [Know]. Thesis VI taught fully: observed, historical, symbolic, believed. (coming)
- The Six Exercises [Act]. Steiner's basic exercises, presented as his account and tested in practice. (coming)
- Divine Mind: Reading Hermes [Know]. The Corpus Hermeticum dated honestly; microcosm–macrocosm as symbol, not history. (coming)
The Return
- Backward Review [Act]. The day walked in reverse; self-knowledge without self-accusation. (coming)
- The I That Endures [Know, DEPTH]. Thesis III at full weight: development continues across lives; labeled openly as conviction. (coming)
- The Lamp and the Living Image: Bridge to Degrees I & II. Where this pillar leads. (coming)
The practices
Alongside the reading, this pillar keeps a practice shelf: small, voluntary, reversible disciplines, each with its purpose, its dose, and its cautions stated plainly. Three of them (Focused Thought, Open Inquiry, and Backward Review) are Foundation practices: three of the Eight that the 40-Day Preparation later gathers into one daily rhythm. They appear here first, in ordinary clothes: five minutes of thought held on a pencil, two minutes spent inside a foreign idea, the day watched backward like a film before sleep. That the elementary acts of a governed mind look this small is not an accident. It is the point.
Where it leads
The arc of this pillar arrives at Degrees I & II: Study, The Lamp; Imagination, The Living Image: the degrees where the trained thinking begins its deeper work. The tenth article is the bridge. Further on stands Degree V: Correspondence, where the Hermetic material deepens; whoever takes to this pillar meets it again there.
Where it grows
This pillar is an open list, and says so. Planned directions: Philosophy of Freedom study track · logic and honest argument · deepening meditation, with its cautions · the memory arts.
